How Do You Become a Vet Tech?
A vet tech is a professional who takes care of animals and ensures that the sick ones get specialized nursing care. They also offer technical support to veterinarians, diagnose and treat common animal illnesses as well as offering advice to animal owners on the best way to care for their animals.
Vet tech programs are offered in a number of colleges and universities across the nation. The program can be offered as certificates, diplomas and associate degrees. The mode of study can either be classroom-based or online method where the student does not have to physically attend the classes. The course usually takes 2 years to complete. Some of these colleges include Argosy University, Apollo College, Western Career College, Brown Mackie College, Vatterott College and Penn Foster Schools.
After the college education, one should take an exam that upon passing they become registered vet techs. The exam varies from state to state but the purpose is universal; to test if the student has comprehensively understood the college coursework. For one to be allowed to sit for this exam, he/she should provide proof of college graduation. The exam is administered by the state’s board of veterinary examiners and is taken in three forms: written, oral and practical.
There is also the nationwide exam that the candidate should sit for in order to have a practicing license. The National Veterinarian Technician (NVT) exam prepares the candidate for employment. This is a 4-hour test that covers animal nursing, pharmacology, surgical procedures and laboratory procedures. Most employers will only recruit a vet tech if they have successfully fulfilled all the requirements set by the national board.
To improve the chances of landing a better job, specialization is very much encouraged. The vet tech therefore gets to choose the area they feel most comfortable with and advance their education biased on that particular area. Specialization can be done in dentistry, internal medicine, critical care, equine medicine, behavior and anesthesia.
Apart from the academic requirements, one needs to have absolute love for animals. There is absolutely no way one can take of something they don’t love.
